I’ve Chosen to compare and contrast modern models to Greek and Roman Artist. Displaying how supermodels today has taken history and remodel it.
The techniques that modern models have today are in many ways related to the way Greek and roman artist created their pieces. Modern models today show emotion, they do things to stand out, like making their hair very large and or wearing clothes that would make you look twice, they show confidence and their expression when walking down the runway is fierce showing some kind of emotion, almost having the definition of resembling Hellenistic art. Models to this day always try to imitate portraits like Mona Lisa and, the Spear Bearer because the pieces of art have so many techniques that a model today should have but even a person had there own twist to being apart of modern modeling, Isadora Duncan.
Many works of art especially the Greeks work of art are still admired today. Famous Artist name still remain known for their best pieces of art work. One of those famous artists being Leonardo da Vinci most famous for his portrait of Mona Lisa the mysterious women that still to this day remains unknown. Mona Lisa was created in the sixteenth Century and is located in Louvre museum in Paris. Also, still known today which was also by Leonardo da Vinci, “The Spear Bearer” created to show the proportion of human being.
The portrait of Mona Lisa which is just her face resembling a woman with a mysterious smile, she shows emotions; she has confident, even with the questionable smile. Modern models today have trouble doing this showing two emotions at one time. Just being confident is something so hard for a model to do, but knowing it’s possible because of this portrait of Mona Lisa. Mona Lisa presents class, by being fully dressed and crossing her arms. Most modern models try to act classy and hope to have the reputation of being classy. She appears to have clear skin as if she takes good care of her skin, which is another thing modern models have to do be successful in the modeling world. Mona Lisa appears to take pride in here appearance her hair is neat not a piece out of place as well as her clothes. When I first saw Mona Lisa I would have guess that she could have been a plus size model only because she looks a little heavy, but she still depicts the acts of a modern model.
When I saw the portrait I thought about one of the main things a model should have which was confidence, resembling being poised. Having a natural look and being photographic, knowing the angles that would make the picture be more a success, knowing how to catch the light, even though Mona Lisa portrait was painted and not taking by a camera you would never been able to tell. Even today super models like Tyra Banks try to imitate Mona Lisa trying for hours and even days to capture the same expression and even confident that Mona Lisa portray in this photo.
Identifying the other piece by Leonardo Da Vinci “The Spear Bearer”, also resembles modern model techniques. The Spear Bearer was originally created to show proportion of human. When looking at the Spear Bearer you can see the structure of the body. The muscles, resembling that body is being taken care of. The Spear Bearer has the shape, the confident, and even the face a modern model will have today. Being able to be total nude and still have confidence and show high self-esteem is a huge part of being a model. Being able to stay in a healthy shape is something models today struggle to do, often ending in being anorexia. Today modern models really don’t have to concede to being extra small, because curves are in. Everyone is looking for that Beautiful face and curvy body. Like in the spear bearer the figure is not completely skinny, but is in shape and do resemble curves. The spear bearer, because it’s a man (which can still be compared to modern models because there are male models) has pectoral muscles like the Kritios Boy. The spear Bearer has a simple pose that is beings shown in the picture but it a pose that super model still do today, also just recently use on the Tyra Banks show as a challenge to the upcoming models, which was very difficult. The spear Bearer has a fierce face and very confident pose, even with being nude. Every part of the body is being shown, and important part of being a model and being captured in a photo is always having neck, to be able to look long, to give off the effect of being taller than what you are, and even though this is a simple pose that young child could do its more tan just that, it’s the small things like how the leg is being positioned, how the arms a turned and even the expression on the Spear Bears face.
Also an important part of modern modeling or modeling period is having a purpose. Being able to tell a story and showing grace. Telling a story without talking and being different without looking for anyones approval. Taking huge steps to set the bar high, and that’s what Isadora did. She was the first to dance in ballet barefooted which was a sign of rebelling against classical ballet. She made a statement saying “I have discovered the art that has been lost for two thousands years”. Isadora was not afraid of doing what she felt was right and that’s what modeling is all about. The things you feel is wrong are always the things that are right in modeling. Isadora is a completely full example of a model she has what both the Spear Bear and Mona Lisa have but together. She shows emotions in her face as well as in her body, her head is turned upward and her hands are up in the air, as if she’s giving it her all. If you look close enough Isadora has one leg in front one another almost like she trying to resemble the concept contrappposto. Isadora is very much like Mona Lisa because she gives off class which is again something that’s very important, because being a model is like automatically being a role model to upcoming models but more important every young female looking at you. So showing that you have respect and dignity is showing that you have class. Isadora is fully dressed, not showing barley any parts of her body. She appears to have clean and clear skin which tells that she takes pride in her appearance, her hair isn’t messy but every piece is in place. She has a natural look, she don’t appear to be doing to much to look something that she’s not. She resembles to be what a person would look for in a model today, she’s not skinny, but she’s not over weight. She has those curves that a modern model should have. Also having something in common with the Spear Bearer she shows a similar pose as the spear bearer was doing. She is showing her neck and even though you can’t really see her face you can tell that there is some kind of emotion in her face. Being a model is nothing easy at all, having all these techniques are all important, there’s not one that’s more important than another one, but standing out and still being you and never losing yourself is what’s important. By having these art piece to look back at helps a lot of models out today. Using Greek artist and even Isadora as a guide to better themselves is such a great thing. I sure that’s modern models today would just love to give them a standing ovation. In my personal opinion as a model I would use all there famous pieces as a guide to become a better model. In different ways which was given for all three, do they all help out. Wondering if the artist known back then the influence they would have now.
